John Chilembwe, known as the martyr of Central Africa, traveled to the United States to study for two years at Virginia Seminary. He returned to his native country where he worked as a missionary and political leader, in 1916 leading a short but violent battle in response to the treatment of Africans by British colonists. Chilembwe’s revolt is considered the precursor of later nationalist movements. His image now appears on the Malawi paper currency.
