Dr. Augustus Nathaniel Lushington (1869-1939) Lynchburg Veterinarian

Dr. A.N. Lushington, born in Trinidad in the West Indies, attended Cornell University and then studied veterinary medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his degree in 1897. Dr. Lushington was the first black graduate of the University’s School of Veterinary Medicine and is believed to be one of the first African Americans in the country to receive a degree in veterinary medicine.

Dr. Augustus Nathaniel Lushington’s barrister bookcase stood in his veterinary office at 1005 Fifth Street. The office was later used by dentists Dr. George F. Jackson, Sr., and Dr. George F. Jackson, Jr.

Donated by Cornelia Campbell in honor of Drucilla Moultrie and in memory of Dr. A. N. Lushington and his stepson George Grimes.
