The Legacy Museum and the Virginia SOLs

June 2001-June 2002

The former exhibit at the Legacy Museum of African American History, “Struggle, Sacrifice, and Scholarship: Black Education in Central Virginia, 1800-1922,” addressed a number of the new SOLs in history and social science.

This guide explains features of that exhibit that illustrate and support the SOLs.

Each item in the guide follows the same format:

  • statement of the SOL
  • location of relevant exhibit topics (Gallery One, Two, or Three)
  • notes on relevant topics, images, and artifacts

Grade Levels:

Grades K-3
Grades 4-5
Grades 6-8
Grades 9-12

The museum is located at 403 Monroe Street in Lynchburg, adjacent to the Old City Cemetery. Many groups enjoy visiting both sites on one field trip. To arrange for a visit to the Legacy Museum, please call the museum administrator, Mrs. Thelma Mundy, at 845-3455.
